The 2001 World Juniors and Girls-20 Chess Championships will be held from 16th to 29th August 2001, in the Chess House of the Exhibition Center of Peristeri Municipality, which is located 5 km from the center of Athens, Greece. The confirmed field consist of 86 boys and 57 girls. Participants include 3 GMs, 3 WGMs, 19 IMs, 10 WIMs, 7 FMs and 10 WFMs.

Deep Junior 7
The New WMC Champion

Deep Junior continued its performance in round 8, by defeating Rebel. Like round 7, it utilized its time in building pressure on the opponent, and creating weak spots. Finally, Rebel gave up thus giving the title to Deep Junior, with still a round to go. On the other boards, Shredder easily beat Chess Tiger and Quest drew with Crafty.

Deep Jr. 7 officiates its victory with a 2 point lead
With a draw against Gandalf in the final round, Deep Jr. officially clinched the WMC Champion title. Deep Jr. remained undefeated through out the event and finished off with a two point lead with 8/9, while Quest and Shredder trailed with 6 points.

The 9th Lost Boys Chess Tournament
The 9th Lost Boys International open tournament is taking place at Amsterdam (10-19 Aug 2001). The event will be played in 9 rounds (7 rounds for the D-group) following the Swiss-system. Van Wely draws with Sutovsky to get the gold
Loek van Wely remained dominant during the whole event, and finished first by drawing with Sutovsky in the tough final round. Sutovsky, Piket, Sokolov and Timman shared the second position. 14-year old Daniel Stellwagen acquired his third IM-norm, but still has to wait for the title since he hasn't played thirty games. 3rd Asian Chess Championship
World Chess Qualifying Championship Incorporating 3rd Asian Individual Chess Championship is going is underway at Kolkotta, West Bengal, India from 9th to 17th August 2001. It is an eleven round Swiss tournament. Time Controls: 40 moves in 75 minutes, 15 minutes for the remainder of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move 1 (In the absence of Digital Game Timers, the time control to be used will be 40 moves in 1-1/2 hours and 30 minutes for the remainder of the game). Title: The winner is awarded the title of Asian Champion. Total prize Money is US$ 64,000.00. Website

Qureshi's Comments:

Xu Jun attains Asian Emperorship
Xu Jun of China took the title of "Third Asian Champion" by drawing his last round game against Alexi Barsov. Xu was awarded Gold Medal and cash prize of $12,000. Saidali Iuldachev of Uzbekistan took the second spot on 8 points, he also quickly agreed to draw with Indian Surya Sekhar Ganguly and bagged cash award of $1000 and Silver Medal. Three players tied for the third to sixth positions, on better tie break Surya Sekhar Ganguly got third post and Bronze Medal, the cash prizes of third to sixth were shared equally and each player recevied $5,750. Young Indian sensation Pentalya Harikrishna was unable to score a win against Iranian Eshan Ghaem Maghami to get GM title, now he has to start afresh, and get his 4th norm to clinch GM title. Three Indian Players, S.S. Ganguly, Bibyendu Barua and Pentalya Harikrishna qualified for FIDE world Championship. Krishnan Sasikiran performed badly, but he has already qualified for the championship through zonals. Pakistan's only representative IM Mahmood Lodhi was seeded 17th in the event. He played poorly, and acquired 4.5 points, and shared the 55-65 position. His only win came against lowest rated participant from Sri Lanka, TDR Pieris (2.5).

10th round

Top seeded Xu Jun of China qualified for the World Chess Championship by drawing in tenth round game with compatriot Yu Shaeteng. He now just needs half point in last round to clinch Asian Champion title. World Chess Federation (FIDE) Treasurer Mr. David Jerrett, will distribute the prizes tomorrow.

9th round
The ninth round of tournament was full of excitement as 10 norms were made. From India, IM P Harikrishna achieved his 3rd and final GM norm, IM Surya Sekhar Ganguly got his first GM norm, Sriram Jha confirmed his 3rd and final IM norm. Eshan Ghaem Maghami became the first GM of Iran by drawing against Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan. Other Iranians to achieve the IM norms were Mahjoob Morteza and Amir Mallahi.
